The Stock Island Detention Center\, built to withstand a Category Five Hurricane\, is elevated on stilts approximately 11 feet above ground level. \nBelow the building\, there is employee parking and a secure fenced area designated for inmate evacuation in case of a fire. It was in this initially unused gravel space within the evacuation area that the farm was established.
