Southernmost Pre-Columbian Site

Presenter: Ryan Harke

"Located just off the northeast corner of Key West, Stock Island was the second archaeological site recorded in Monroe County. The site is one of the biggest Pre-Columbian habitations ever known in the Keys, consisting of a black-earth mound and a large midden of shells, sea-turtle bones, and fish and shark remains. In this presentation, Ryan will present his ongoing dissertation research there, which seeks to determine whether Stock Island was a seasonal fishing ground used by mainland natives, or the site of a permanent year-round village."

About the presenter:

"Ryan Harke has conducted compliance archaeology throughout Florida over the past eight years, and served as a public archaeologist for the Florida Public Archaeology Network at Flagler College in St. Augustine. His research combines shell artifacts and marine biology to study how Native Americans in the Florida Keys interacted with their island environments. Ryan teaches archaeology and anthropology at the University of South Florida, Tampa, and is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Anthropology"
