Southernmost Pre-Columbian Site
June 28, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Key West Art & Historical Society Presents:
Southernmost Pre-Columbian Site
Presenter: Ryan Harke
"Located just off the northeast corner of Key West, Stock Island was the second archaeological site recorded in Monroe County. The site is one of the biggest Pre-Columbian habitations ever known in the Keys, consisting of a black-earth mound and a large midden of shells, sea-turtle bones, and fish and shark remains. In this presentation, Ryan will present his ongoing dissertation research there, which seeks to determine whether Stock Island was a seasonal fishing ground used by mainland natives, or the site of a permanent year-round village."
About the presenter:
"Ryan Harke has conducted compliance archaeology throughout Florida over the past eight years, and served as a public archaeologist for the Florida Public Archaeology Network at Flagler College in St. Augustine. Ryan teaches archaeology and anthropology at the University of South Florida, Tampa, and is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Anthropology"
