Established in 1994, the farm initially occupied an open area beneath the jail facility. The Stock Island Detention Center, built to withstand a Category Five Hurricane, is elevated on stilts approximately 11 feet above ground level.
Below the building, there is employee parking and a secure fenced area designated for inmate evacuation in case of a fire. It was in this initially unused gravel space within the evacuation area that the farm was established.
